Interview with Glenn Parker and James Cape of Photolibrary

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

The Australian Photolibrary Group has drawn attention to itself in a very short period of time following a number of takeovers: the Anthony Blake Food Collection, the Garden Picture Library, Oxford Scientific, Monsoon and CDI The Image Library. Probably its most spectacular acquisition was New York based Index Stock. What are the Australian company’s plans?visuell: Let’s begin with the latest takeover in your company’s expansion programme and talk about Index Stock. Many people in the industry were surprised at your purchase of this agency in view of the fact that it does not really fit into what has been your acquisition strategy to date – up to now, you have bought small but well-stocked specialist agencies. How does Index Stock, with its more conservative stockfile, fit into this picture? Was the price simply too attractive?

photolibrary: Our strategy in the past has been to principally acquire analogue archives in niche areas, digitise the archive and provide a robust IT platform for the business to grow in their own right plus having the additional benefit of being placed onto photolibrary.com, our generalist website. We have concentrated on the more specialist forms of content as these images have a longer useful life and have a more defensible position in terms of the market. Business and lifestyle images by concept can date quite quickly. Also, they are relatively easy to replicate and in the main are dominated by the numerous royalty free producers that now exist. Typically these sorts of images are used for below the line type advertising and given the huge mass of royalty free images now available it is seen as an easy choice by clients. It is very difficult and unusual for advertising agencies to use stock images with a lifestyle aspect in large above the line campaigns unless timing/budgetary constraints are an issue. Our experience has been that the more specialist images are not just the province of editorial users but are increasingly utilised at the top end of advertising due to their uniqueness and usefulness as backdrops. As I said, lifestyle and business imagery for advertising and design customers is increasingly becoming the home for royalty free if for no other reason than the huge mass of RF images and the ease of replication that exists.

visuell: But what made you take over Index Stock against this background?

photolibrary: In terms of North America, it is by far the largest market for stock photography. We had struggled in the past to find a good partner in the US who could sell all of our content across all subjects (not just the specialities but our own rights managed and royalty free lifestyle). On the other hand, the Index material had been an extremely good revenue source for photolibrary.com not just in editorial but in advertising as well in the various regions in which we represented them (ie such as the United Kingdom, Australia throughout Asia, the subcontinent and the Middle East). Finally, Index had developed a subscription product called Index Open which we thought could be developed further and over time be available via all of our offices, not just North America. Thus the fit for us strategically was good.

visuell: But there’s no doubt quite a lot to do at Index Stock.

photolibrary: The main issue now with Index is to complete our editing programme so that the good saleable images are brought to the fore. In addition we will communicate with the artist community to re-establish lost ties with Index. In all likelihood this will be via our generalist brand, photolibrary.com and our high end brand, Monsoon Images. We are now one of the very few companies with multiple offices around the world so we are now in a position to truly network photographers worldwide.

visuell: When we think about the big series of acquisitions carried out by Getty Images and Corbis, we recall that in some cases these big players had serious difficulties integrating these agencies into the parent company. Like them, you have bought up firms pretty quickly. Is there anything you have been able to learn from the Americans?

photolibrary: We have never had any real difficulties in integration. Our first acquisition was in the UK in October 2002 (the Photographers Library), the next more than 18 months later (Oxford Scientific in May 2004) and the next more than a year after that (Garden Picture Library in June 2005). We learnt a lot from these acquisitions and took our time integrating them. This knowledge has helped us tremendously now in terms of the several we have done over the past six months. Obviously, Index is the largest and will take the most time but we are well down the track on that and are meeting all of our timelines. For example, Photolibrary US is live and we will be starting our marketing programme shortly.

visuell: Could you tell us something about your brand strategy? Up to now, your agencies have been operating under their own labels with their own websites and have not yet been integrated into an umbrella brand. Do you intend to keep things this way?

photolibrary: We take the view that certain customers want a certain type and level of service so we keep the more specialist websites for those customers and also retain the technical knowledge of the staff. This is often a key differentiator, particularly for the specialist editorial markets. However, we do actually sell the brands under one umbrella as well – www.photolibrary.com. This is our generalist website. Photolibrary.com sells to the wider range of audiences whilst the specialist websites retain their own customers and branding. You cannot be everything to everyone and choice makes a difference even if the customer knows or suspects that it is dealing with the same underlying company.

visuell: It’s conspicuous that, apart from the UK, the Photolibrary Group has no offices in Europe but has a presence in many Asian countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, India, the Philippines, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates. Do these countries have the best growth rates?

photolibrary: Certainly the growth rates in certain parts of Asia are better whilst the middle east and subcontinent are widely known to be growth economic areas so I doubt whether this would be a surprise to anyone. As regards Europe, we have strong relationships in some countries who are doing a great job for us.

visuell: Photolibrary is focusing on stock agencies and keeping out of the news and press business. Does this market not appeal to you?

photolibrary: Yes it is of interest but we still see sustained growth in our market segments for stock images. We are also increasingly seeing an uplift in stock footage. We entered this market via the acquisition of Oxford Scientific Films and are now replicating this product via our main website. In addition, we intend to expand our subscription offering to target this market segment further.

visuell: How is Photolibrary going to develop in the future? What new moves are you planning? Are you going to purchase more agencies?

More And More Flicks AKA Dartflix Edition # 21

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

This year alone 21 films were made or filmed in Boston or used Boston as a filming location. Of those 21 films how many of them will do anything to break up the widespread notion/belief that there are no brown people here or that we are simply a non entity that exists just so actors of other ethnicities can refer to us as “niggers”? Few if any.

Recently in Boston we hosted the annual Roxbury Film Festival that boasted films by some of best and brightest filmmaking and screenwriting talent Boston, Massachusetts and New England has to offer. These films will more than likely go ignored by the film industry at large, though. I have yet to see a film that reflects the experience that myself or many of my peers experienced growing up in Boston yet. Don’t even get me started on “Blue Hill Avenue”…as a life long Bostonian and a South End resident I don’t even have enough time to address everything that was just plain inaccurate about that film. Unfortunately, that film is the one movie about Boston that most young minorities have seen in regards to my city. Makes me wanna holler.

Next big national Boston movie coming up is “Gone Baby Gone” directed by Cambridge resident Ben Affleck. It looks like this will be a pretty good flick (featuring everyone’s favorite crazy White boy Slaine in a key role) but it won’t do much to erase the damage done by several lines from the Academy Award winning film “The Departed”..a film that pisses me off so much that I still haven’t watched it all the way through yet.

As a Black Bostonian I can’t express with words how much it angers me that I don’t have the power to make or greenlight a film that could respond to that one that was seen by millions worldwide. Now they all think that it’s hell to be Black in Boston. It’s hard being Black, period…Boston is nowhere near as bad for brown people as these films (written by people than never experienced it for themselves) make you think.

Either way, we NEED to let people know we’re here and we’ve been here…if people knew the real deal then Kevin Garnett never would’ve had to make hella phone calls to players that played here and poll sports figures of color that play here now/reside here after retirement. If you’re a Black person that has to move to a new town would you REALLY pick moving to Phoenix over Boston? (No diss to Arizona but I’m just sayin’ though). On to the movie stuff. Mad new flicks are droppin’ this fall.

Ind. Gov't. - Indiana property taxes: Who benefits from taking property off the Center Twp. tax rolls?

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Karen Eschbacher of the Indianapolis Star has a front-page story on the impact of tax abatements and tax increment financing districts in Marion County. A side-bar explains “How tax abatements, districts work.”

Earlier, on August 19th, the Star ran this story on property tax exemptions, including this quote:All told, Marion County exempts more than $2.7 billion worth of property. And that doesn’t include Marion County’s many government buildings, which are exempt, and breaks offered to prospective new businesses. So we in Marion County, and particularly Center Township, have the quadruple whammy: tax abatements, TIFs, permanently tax-exempt not-for-profit properties, and permanently tax-exempt state and local governmental properties. The properties remaining on the tax rolls after all these carve-outs finance the governmental operations and schools in the County.

The ILB resides in Center Township in a historic district and over the years has talked about the tax situation with a number of different residents who have moved into the downtown area from out-of-state to take prestigious jobs downtown at our major sports NFP, our university system, and our Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company, all of whom benefit from major property tax breaks. In every case, she has heard that the strong advice these newcomers received from their recruiters was to purchase homes in the counties to the north of Marion, where “the schools were good, crime was not an issue, property taxes were lower,” etc. These few people who did end up locating near the downtown did so only by ignoring such advice and acting on their own.

And to the ILB, that states the problem in a nutshell. Yes, there is much to be said for all these programs. But how on earth can it be reasonable to put the burden for them upon the taxpayers in one county, and one township, when the benefits are so much more diverse?

Eschbacher’s story today makes the same point:A big chunk of property value in Downtown Indianapolis doesn’t help fill the public kitty: 14.5 percent of assessed value in Center Township was diverted in 2006.

That translates into more than $35 million in property taxes that was siphoned off.

The situation there is magnified because of additional abated and exempted properties such as hospitals and churches.

Among the tax districts, abatements and exemptions, 28 percent of all assessed value in Center Township either is not taxed, or the revenue generated from it is diverted.

That chiefly affects Indianapolis Public Schools, the core of which is in Center Township and which relies on property taxes to pay for capital expenses and some operating costs.

The result: Other taxpayers must chip in more than they would have to if that revenue were on the rolls and available.

And unlike abatements, which last up to 10 years and require businesses to pay a growing portion of their tax bill each year, the tax districts can remain in place for up to 30 years. They used to be limitless, and some are grandfathered in under that rule. * * *

Incentive programs for businesses are unlikely to go away, but some are suggesting more oversight or spreading the burden.

As the General Assembly looks to ease the burden on property owners, abatements and special tax districts are certain to be discussed. Already this summer, a bipartisan legislative panel studying the property tax problem held a session mostly about the topic.

Rep. Craig R. Fry, D-Mishawaka, would like both incentive programs done away with.

“TIFS and tax abatements are a direct shift of responsibility from businesses to homeowners,” Fry said. But he concedes that view puts him in the minority.

Others said they want to look at tweaking the programs.

Rep. David Orentlicher, D-Indianapolis, said the state could consider modifying the programs so homeowners in areas heavy with abatements and the tax districts — such as the IPS taxing districts — don’t have to bear so much of the burden.

“If these (incentives) are appropriate for the region, we shouldn’t put all of the burden on the taxpayers in IPS,” Orentlicher said. “We need to figure out a way to make sure the costs are shared.”See also this Star editorial from August 23rd, including this list of questions:What might be done to help offset the disproportionate tax exempt property load carried by Center Township? Almost 22 percent of its land is tax exempt, and that does not include government buildings. It is the hub of our region, and its residents must pay for services used by all who visit, shop, work and use government services based Downtown.

Is it time to review all nonprofit exemptions to make certain they qualify for a break? Many states are looking at charging nonprofits fees for police, fire and other basic services. That’s especially relevant to Indianapolis, where public safety has been chronically underfunded. The Town of Cumberland, for example, bills nonresidents for police services in an effort to shift some of the expense off property taxes.

Should nonprofits be required to pay for various public services in the same way they pay for other business expenses such as legal and banking fees?

Could user fees be charged to nonprofits on a sliding scale, or based on their ability to pay? Those with robust revenues and extensive resources cited in The Star would pay one rate, and those operating on a smaller scale would pay less. Those that showed a loss could be exempted from the fees.Lesley Stedman Weidenbener of the Louisville Courier Journal has a useful article today, complete with a number of links, on how the homeowner can have input in the current property tax crisis.

It’s About Victory, Not a Man

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

In response to the request for renewing my membership in the Nebraska Republican Party, I politely voiced my displeasure with Chuck Hagel’s stand on the war on terror. I wasn’t rude to the nice young lady on the other end of the line, no need to shoot the messenger, nor was I going to dismiss myself from the GOP. But it was an opportune time to share my views.

The young lady, likely armed with provided talking points, replied that no other Senator was more conservative than Senator Hagel. She pointed to his voting with the President 98% of the time last year as proof. No other Senator could boast such a thing.

I had to pause and quickly recall what I had just told her moments earlier. Nope, I hadn’t said anything about voting with or against the President, but that’s where the talking points trained her to go.

I had only shared my disappointment with Senator Hagel’s unwillingness to fight for victory, nothing more. But a nearly irrelevant response was given from an errantly based set of talking points.

I should have started back in, Marine Corps style, with a “What in the wide, wide world of sports does that have to do with the Senator accepting defeat in Iraq? I wasn’t talking about every other issue….”

But I let her off the hook and simply restated “that on the most important issue of our time, he’s on the wrong side of the argument.” I didn’t have the heart to shoot the messenger.

Not only was her response off-base, but its validity was questionable depending upon how one defines “conservative.” Anyone who received that response could have asked her how conservative it’s been to let federal spending spiral out of control with the approval of the Senate and no veto from the President. There could have been arguments about illegal immigration or “No Child Left Behind” which some on the right are fanatically opposed to. A neo-conservative would have argued that we should have bombed Iran and North Korea quite some time ago and that both George Bush and Chuck Hagel were not “conservative” in that regard.

But none of those topics implied in her answer were relevant to my point. I hadn’t shared disappointment in him not voting with the President 100% of the time, I don’t expect him, or any other Senator to. I was stating my disappointment with our state’s Republican Senator not arguing for victory.

Because, when laid bare, that’s what the argument is. Are you willing to fight for victory against terrorists or not? The question is not “do you vote or agree with the President, how often, and on what issues?” It is whether or not you are willing to accept, or even argue for defeat, and then be willing to face the guaranteed consequences of doing so.

What’s at stake here is much more important than how often one agrees with George W. Bush on all the issues. The same would hold true for any other President during war-time. At stake here is the long-term security of our country which directly affects our freedoms, thus it supersedes the argument about any one man because it affects all of us.

This President, and every other President, is only a temporary care-taker, charged with preserving the freedoms endowed upon us by our Creator to which we are all obligated to defend.

But somehow this argument about the challenge to those rights posed by terrorists has become focused on supporting or not supporting George W. Bush, the man. It has mutated into a debate about him personally. It should be about leading our country to victory over Islamic extremists intent on destroying our nation, but sadly it is not.

Take a stroll through leftist websites and you’ll find the argument is a personal one about George W. Bush, first, foremost, and quite often the only one made. Read the comments on discussion boards intended for debate on the war, and you’ll find many comments that are not actually about the war, but are personal attacks against George Bush. You’ll be hard pressed to find arguments for our nation, but find no shortage of arguments against that one man.

The debates in the House and Senate last week noticeably lacked rhetoric reflecting a desire for victory in Iraq and the rest of the war on terror. They represented the path our country has taken. We have lost our way, searching for personal answers about a man instead of our nation, its security or its future.

Many on the left lost their way and gave up the cause for victory over terrorists quite some time ago. They’ve since then made their stand, arguing against Bush, not for American victory.

But now it seems that some on the right have become confused about what the argument should be. It should be about the security and future of the nation, not whether you vote with this President on pork barrel spending.

Young party workers armed with talking points about the congruency of a politician’s voting record with that of George W. Bush’s indicates political leadership which has missed the point.

It’s time for all of us to get back on track and then focus on what this is truly about.

Let us not forget . . . .

We remember . . . all those who lost their lives and loved ones in the attack of September 11, 2007 and especially Noell Maertz and his family . . . . and the soldiers who have lost their lives fighting this war on terrorism. God bless you today and always.

Deadly deadlines (catchy…..isn’t it)

Friday, March 14th, 2008

My life these past two weeks has been take over by deadlines.

The deadline to return Marathon travel forms, recommitment forms, fundraising forms etc. was August 13th. Deadline for Kenner and I to put on our fundraising event was August 16th. Fundraising deadline was August 17th and there were many, MANY deadlines for me at work. And the deadline to get ready for the 16 mile run - is today.

A few things about each of those.

We are officially going to Florence to run the marathon!! I’m very excited. We have a few extra days after the run to hang out in Italy. And while I’m not sure what the extent of our devastation is going to be after the marathon, someone pointed out to me recently that at least I will be recovering on a Piazza in Florence, drinking Lavazza and watching beautiful Italian people go by.

Good point.

Our fundraising event was great! I was nervous at first because we got a lot of verbal “I’ll be there” but not a lot of online donations. In the end though, the place was almost full. The show was great! Kenner was manning the light (per his acting experience in his prior life) and we all had a good laugh. Not at Kenner - at the actors. And it was a good thing, since they put on an improv comedy show. To all my friends, colleagues and supporters - thank you SO MUCH for coming out that day! Hope you had as much fun as I did.

Fundraising deadline was August 17th. As of today, I’m at a confirmed $4, 690. I know I need to update my donor page… it’s been a while. John Beach, our fundraising coordinator, e-mailed me yesterday and said that I am no longer the top Florence marathon fundraiser (which I have been up to that point). After my inherently competitive spirit calmed down a bit, I realized it was a good thing. More money for the Foundation. I also realized that I have a number of donations in the pipeline that will raise my total in the next two to three weeks. And that helped soothe my wounds.

In the context of the marathon, the many, MANY deadlines at work mean nothing other than I have been working 12 hour days this week, getting 4-5 hours of sleep at night, squeezed in just one run this week and am nervous as hell about our 16 miler today. It’s 6:55 am right now and I’m trying to do everything right: got up in plenty of time, drank my coffee, got my body going, ate, had water, packed a ton of caffeinated gels… I’ve been hydrating religiously this week, thinking it’s the one thing I can do that will help me today.

It’s been raining like hell in Chicago. A series of floods swept through the midwest these past few days and this morning is no different. It’s windy and raining.

Do I have what it takes? We’ll find out soon enough.

A good post day and the joy of foliage.

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Today my much awaited parcel from Sweden arrived, brimming with vintage table linens and an embroidered wall-hanging. The postman also delivered the SylvaC vases from the Waikato at the crack of dawn. The vases, which I’d forgotten I had bid on, were $1 for all three. Such a bargain if ever there was one!!!! They are all absolutely gorgeous shapes and one is textured in hydrangea flowers. I couldn’t believe my luck that nobody else had bid on them…

I’ve been doing a bit of household admin today, and at three I sat down for my daily quiet reflection and a cup of coffee when Astrid woke up and has been grizzly ever since. As the magic sling is good on these occasions I popped her in and went out to the garden to pick some flowers and foliage. It being Autumn we’re a bit short on flowers, but the leaves and berries are just wonderful. The Japanese Anemones and Dahlias are also in bloom so we picked some of those in between the heavy bouts of rain. It’s been dark and moody today and we’ve even had a spot of lightning.

So in we came and spent an hour or so putting the arrangements together. I really love foliage. I never really realised it existed until late last year when we were selling our house and I couldn’t afford too many flowers so had to buy ‘leaves’.

Wow - well what a discovery that was. They a so good at creating the structure in an arrangement and one then uses the flowers as decoration.

It makes life much easier - before when I had tried to create an entire arrangement just from flowers it would all just flop because there wasn’t anything to hold them up. Now when I use just a few stems of foliage my arrangements are so much more professional looking.

With this arrangement I lay the leafy twigs down into the posy vase and carefully placed the flowers in and around.

Five For Tie,Six For Record, Bonds Hits 650

Monday, March 10th, 2008

San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds, got closer to making history Friday night as he got career home run number 650, in his team’s 4-3 loss to the Arizona Diamond- backs 4-3. Bonds led off the eighth by hitting the dinger off of D-Backs starter Livan Hernandez, which at that point knotted up the game at 3-3. Arizona, catcher Miguel Montero put Arizona ahead in the top of the tenth with a solo shot off San Francisco hurler Brad Hennesey for the eventual game winning run. The Giants have now lost their last three games.
